Writing Competitions

This list is just a few of the writing contests available. I am always updating the list as I receive new information. If you have gone to competition or competed through another conference and found it to be helpful, I would appreciate the information for consideration.

Tips for writers interested in competing

I encourage writers to write and enter contests. A few years ago a friend of mine encouraged me to enter a contest and to my surprise, I won. As you can imagine, it was really exciting. I used the prize money to attend my very first writing conference. Since then I have entered writing contests and not placed. I will still keep trying because the feedback I get helps me become a better writer and competing is fun!

Competitions are often held at local levels to get speakers to the state and national levels, but not always. It depends on the guidelines of the sponsoring group or organization.

Writers often but not always compete through conferences which sponsor the contests.

Some contests are open to any writer who wishes to enter.

Conferences sometimes charge entrance fees and those fees vary depending on the contest.

You must be a member of some groups and organizations to compete in their contests.

Often but not always you must attend the writing conference holding the competition to qualify for entry.

Each competition will have very specific entry information and specifications. You can be disqualified if you do not follow the guidelines.

Competitions are an exciting way to gain experience, challenge yourself and win accolades.

Accolades look great as a writing credential so challenge yourself!
